ISTITUTO TECNICO TECNOLOGICO G.MALAFARINA – SOVERATO, ITALY

ITT G. Malafarina is a high technical school for surveyors, computer programmers and electricians in Soverato, in the South of Italy. Its 600 students, aged 14-19  come  from a range of 50 km. They belong to middle and lower social classes, whose standard of living is based on agriculture, handicraft, fishing  and some tourist activities. The main problem of the rural area where the school operates is the high rate of unemployment. The school is also attended by sons of non-Eu citizens and some students with special needs(H).  Evening classes give workers the possibility of getting a high school diploma. The main goals of the school are: to prepare the students for an active role both as professionals and as civil men in a democratic society, to promote a European awareness of the different cultural values to achieve a greater mutual understanding. These objectives will contribute, through the use of the new technologies, to a new dimension in order to teach the new values and integrate themselves in the new European dimension of the modern citizen. The teaching-learning approach stimulates the creativity of the students and of their teachers (around 100) reducing the percentages of scholastic failure or of social exclusion and favoring equal sex opportunities in order to consolidate acquired experiences and share them in the future.

The questionnaire that the management applied about the needs of educational development showed that the respondents need to increase their ICT and English skills, to learn what health and wellbeing mean, to prepare for interviews and job market, to know to spend their free time to learn something from this, to militate for our safer environmnent and society, in which there will be less social exclusion. The intent of ITT Malafarina is to lead students and teachers to follow the activities connected with the objectives, to bring into forth the common values of the European citizen, to share ideas, to apply curriculum concepts and methods.  It represents even a step towards a general enriching of the implied cultural and social values. Teaching methods adhere to an innovative European Education Syllabus according to which  informatics,  the environmental concern, the learning of foreign languages are incentivized in order to promote international job integration. Students are provided with effective trainings, through individualized support  programmes, curriculum subject competitions, both national and international certificated foreign languages and technical stages during their curricular course and even later. Finally cultural exchanges by joining Bilateral and Multilateral School Partnerships Comenius and Erasmus plus strategic partnerships ensure realistic languages performances.

Developing a strong interest for the new European approach of learning /teaching represents for ITT Malafarina a priority. The high school institute is constantly involved in innovating its teaching, studying and learning processes developing its working organization according to the new digital learning methods and devices thus giving a prompt replay to the new demands globalization requires. Its qualified staff, through European projects, has got  a faithful vision on internationalization in order to warrant the projects quality by interfacing them with the curriculum. It favours  the use of itc in education by providing both teachers and students with all kinds of facilities in order to assure a profitable usability and accessibility of technology for teaching and learning, thus becoming a benchmark both figuratively and practically for all professionals who need a catchment area for recruiting labour force and for improving their own competences through the training and acquiring of certified abilities. In this way teachers even coordinate activities with stakeholders, such as homes, local enterprises and municipality.

The up-to-date learning laboratories ensure factive skills to be developed. As a matter of fact, experience matured in several Comenius Exchange  Partnerships, in Erasmus plus strategic ones and in several national projects and programmes has provided the institute with a unique chance to realize the operative way of running of European Institutions and the processes of developing  European Strategies and Programmes in a multicultural and high-level working context. The staff chosen for this application is responsible for the Eu dimension of the school and for implementing the use of technology.
