GYMNASION ME LYKEIAKES TAXEIS ASOPIAS – ASOPIA, GREECE

ASOPIA JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

SCHOOL’S PROFILE

Asopia Junior and Senior High School is located in a village in the prefecture of Voiotia, 80 klm from the Greek capital, Athens. It has 115 students and 15 teachers and provides general education in secondary level to students coming from an agricultural background. Most of their parents are self-employed in olive, vegetables (carrots, onions and potatoes) and vineyard farming, while struggling to develop packaging industry of their products. In addition, 40% of the student population of our school includes a number of immigrants coming from European and Asian countries. Our students’ ages are from13-17.

Living in a rather disadvantaged area, students are deprived of various leisure time activities. There is limited infrastructure in the area to support cultural or sports interests. For this reason, the focal point of their everyday life is school.

Therefore, our school tries to compensate this lack of opportunities by:

–  providing different educational programs concerning environmental, social or health issues.

– inviting specialists and organizing seminars and meetings for the students and their parents about topics of their interest such as addiction, professional orientation after secondary education, bullying and so on.

– organizing sport events and participating in school sport games with our teams

– educating its teaching staff by Erasmus+ in-service training KA1 in order to be able to use new, interesting and “spicy” teaching methods .

– organizing events (European Day of Languages, theatre plays, concerts etc) and collaborating with European schools through E-twinning. We have already received the National as well as the European Quality Labels for two E-twinning projects.

– giving the chance to the students to come in contact with peers of other countries and work on a project through the Erasmus+ KA2.

Our multicultural school is Europe-oriented and tries to help its students learn to survive in a multicultural environment and open their wings for a better future.

ASSOPIA, our village

Our school is situated in an agricultural area. In Assopia there are about 200 people. Most of the inhabitants cultivate agricultural products (potatoes, carrots, olive oil and so on) and vineyards. The wines produced in the area are famous all over the country. Assopia is a beautiful village, with many interesting natural places (monasteries etc) and very active people who try to keep their traditions.

The closest town is Thiva, about 20 klm from the village of Assopia. Thiva is known for its ancient history and its newly inaugurated museum that is ranked amongst the best in the country. People are known for their hospitality and the delicious grilled meat.
